Event Details

A search for old family photographs and historical documents led to an interview with a 91-year old aunt about the Japanese-American internment camps in World War II. This blossomed into a hard bound book of photos, digital slide shows, a DVD for each family member, and finally, a story for performance. Come and learn how you can preserve memories for your own family and give the gift of your family’s story.

 

Anne Shimojima has delighted audiences of all sizes with her graceful and spirited tellings of folktales from her Asian heritage and around the world. She has taught graduate courses in storytelling and presented this workshop at the National Storytelling Conference in 2008. The story that grew out of this workshop was performed at the 2007 JustStories Storytelling Festival in Chicago.

Storytelling Arts of Indiana



Storytelling Arts of Indiana was originally founded as Stories, Inc. in 1987. Since then, it has grown by leaps and bounds, but our mission remains the same: to promote the art and use of storytelling in everyday life. From local favorites to nationally-recognized names, Storytelling Arts has brought tellers from all walks of life to Hoosier audiences for over two decades. In addition to the full schedule of storytelling concerts, Storytelling Arts of Indiana also provides:

 

  • Weekly storytelling at Riley Children’s Hospital
  • Monthly as I Recall Storytelling Guild meetings at the Glendale Branch Library, Indianapolis Senior Center and the Hancock County Public Library.
  • Monthly Jabberwocky after-work events in collaboration with IndyFringe
  • Summer Performances in the Neighborhood Parks for children
  • A workshop for teachers, Using Storytelling as an Educational Tool: Teaching English/Language State standards through Storytelling Activities
